Hollywood 2
Hollywood had its big sensation when the absolutly unknown actress Vivien Leigh was hired to play Scarlett O′Hara in ”Gone With The Wind“ (1939). Stars as Katharine Hepburn, Joan Crawford or Bette Davis had no chance.
The part of an unscrupulous gangster (”Night And The City“, 1950), the western hero (”Cheyenne Autumn“, 1964) or part in a fastidious movie directed by Gemany′s Volker Schlöndorff (”Ein Aufstand alter Männer“, 1987) show the extensive abilities of Richard Widmark. – Jean Marais is ”The Count Of Monte Cristo“ (1955), ”Napoléon“ (1955) and of course ”Fantomas“
Hollywood′s director George Cukor called Audrey Hepburn (”Sabrina“, 1954 / ”Breakfast At Tiffany′s“, 1961) intelligent, ingenious, modest and cheerful. As a daughter of a Dutch baroness and a British banker she supported the Résistance in Arnheim during World War II.
The films of French actor Eddie Constantine were ”cult“ in the 1960s (”Lemmy Caution“). He also worked with German director R.W. Fassbinder (”Warnung vor einer heiligen Nutte“) oder German rocker Udo Lindenberg (”Panische Zeiten“). – Fred Zinnemann made Pier Angeli a star: The main part in ”Teresa“ (1951) brought her the titel ”Little Garbo“. James Dean was her only love – she could not bare his early death and committed suicide in 1971.
Seeing Charlton Heston you remember first of all the monumental movies of the late 1950s: ”The Ten Commandments“ (1956) or ”Ben Hur“ (1959). – When in 1999 two youngsters of Colombine Highschool in Littleton/Colorade killed pupils and a teacher in a massaker Heston played an inglorious part: President of the NRA (National Rifle Association) he stricly was against any reflection concerning the allowance for everyone in America to own (and use) weapons.
