Spotlight in February ′07 - ”Deep Purple“
Two members of Deep Purple played for ”Episode Six“ beforehand: in 1969 vocalist Ian Gillan replaced Rod Evans on the microphone and Roger Glover played the bass instead of Nick Simper. Founding members besides Evans and Simper were guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice.
The actual staff is: Ian Paice, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover (from the 1969 formation), Don Airey (keyboards) and Steve Morse (guitar).
In 1968 two Deep Purple albums were released: ”Shades Of“ and ”The Book Of Taliesyn“. From the second LP (”The Book Of...“) the single ”Kentucky Woman“, written by Neil Diamond, was taken out. The advertisement for it was made by Tetragrammaton Records in the issue of ”Billboard“, Oct. 26, 1968. The most known LP of Deep Purple is ”In Rock“ (1970), especially because of the cover design the sculptures of the US-Presidents of Mount Rushmore posed for. With this album the band definitively belonged to the hard rock scene. Best known titles: ”Speed King“ and ”Child In Time“. Already in 1969 the live LP ”Concerto For Group & Orchestra“ came out.
At that time Deep Purple was very popular in Germany: After ”In Rock“ the LPs ”Fireball“ (1971), ”Machine Head“ (1972) and ”Burn“ (1974) topped the German LP charts – by the way: in 1987 the album ”The House Of The Blue Light“ was already No 1.
Like ”Burn” the LP ”Stormbringer” came out in 1974. For this album a songbook was issued at the same time.
